Major League Triathlon To Host League Championship Event In Charlotte, NC
Charlotte, NC – Major League Triathlon is thrilled to announce that the league will return to Charlotte in 2018. The MLT Charlotte event will serve as the league Championship and will be held on Saturday, October 6th, 2018. The Carolina Gliders will once again play host to the league’s other teams.
Major League Triathlon is the first and only professional triathlon league in the United States. Fielding eight mixed-gender teams of four in a relay format, the series hosts races in major triathlon destinations and cities across the country in viewer-friendly venues that brings spectators close to Olympians and world-class athletes as they face off in a grueling short-course format.
“Having Charlotte represent our 2018 championship race is a dream come true,” Daniel Cassidy, CEO of MLT, said. “MLT is based right here in Charlotte and is a special place for our team. This will be our biggest and best event ever.”
The eight teams in this professional triathlon league consist of 32 of the best elite triathletes in the world. Each athlete will swim three hundred meters, bike four miles and run one mile in Uptown Charlotte before tagging their next teammate to complete the same circuit. The first team to have all four athletes cross the finish line will win.
The Gliders will have one of the strongest teams in the league, led by team Captain and 2016 Olympian, Ben Kanute. Kanute is joined by current #1 ranked American – Kevin McDowell; the reigning U23 World Champion – Tamara Gorman and 2017 MLT Champion – Lindsey Jerdonek. The Gliders roster also features Tokyo 2020 Olympic hopefuls and USA powerhouse athletes: Chelsea Burns, Tony Smoragiewicz and Tommy Zaferes.
The short and fast-paced nature of the event, a style popularized in Australia, offers a distinct viewer experience as the athletes swim, bike, run and transition directly in front of spectators. Adding to the experience, a USA Triathlon sanctioned youth ‘Splash ’n Dash’ event and other ancillary amateur events will be held in conjunction with the professional race.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Major League Triathlon again to Charlotte in 2018,” says Visit Charlotte’s Sports Development Director Thomas Lee. “ We are a city full of active residents and boast the outdoor amenities to prove it. Our backdrop will be a fantastic setting for these athletes.”
This event will be free and open to the general public. Adding to the excitement of professional, youth and amateur races, the MLT Festival will feature: a vendor expo, food trucks, beer garden, live music, game zone, VIP areas, pro interaction opportunities, strider bike adventure zone for kids, an after party and more.
Major League Triathlon will also introduce the Carolina Gliders amateur ambassador team in 2018. For the first time ever, North Carolina and South Carolina amateur triathletes will have the opportunity to apply to represent the Carolinas’ only pro triathlon team franchise and receive exclusive opportunities throughout the season. More information and the amateur application will be available at the end of February. If you are an amateur triathlete, cyclist or runner and you’re interested in being a part of the Carolina Gliders franchise, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
